Lauriya Nandangarh
Journey Through History at Ashoka’s Pillar and Ancient Buddhist Mounds
The Mauryan Legacy of Lauriya Nandangarh – Pillar, Edicts & Stupas
Located in Bihar’s West Champaran district, Lauriya Nandangarh is a historically rich site dating back to the Mauryan Empire. It is best known for its Ashokan Pillar, a majestic 32-foot-high monolithic sandstone column inscribed with Emperor Ashoka’s edicts in Brahmi script. The inscriptions emphasize moral values, non-violence, and good governance—pillars of Ashoka’s reign.
Just a couple of kilometers away lies Nandangarh, home to an enormous ancient stupa believed to be of Buddhist origin. The mound is around 25 meters tall with a broad circular base. Excavations at the site revealed burnt bone remains, pottery, terracotta figures, and ancient coins, suggesting it was likely a cremation site for revered Buddhist monks or leaders.
Together, the Ashokan pillar and stupa complex represent a fusion of administrative vision and spiritual dedication. The peaceful surroundings, ancient stone architecture, and historical significance make Lauriya Nandangarh an inspiring destination for lovers of history, spirituality, and archaeology.
