Navlakha Palace
Relive Royal Grandeur at Navlakha Palace
Unveiling the Opulent Ruins of Navlakha Palace, Rajnagar – A Royal Legacy of Darbhanga
Situated in Rajnagar near Madhubani, Navlakha Palace is a sprawling royal complex built in the late 19th century by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga Raj. Spanning nearly 1,500 acres, this magnificent palace once featured grand temples, durbar halls, towers, and intricate carvings that reflected the cultural richness of Mithila. It was constructed with elaborate attention to detail, blending Rajput, Mughal, and Maithil architectural elements.
One of the palace’s most remarkable features was its white marble Kali temple, finely carved porticos, and the early use of cement in its elephant-shaped pillars. Inside the Gasauni Ghar, visitors can still spot what is considered the oldest known Mithila painting, dating back to 1919, made for a royal wedding. Navlakha Palace stood as a symbol of Mithila’s royal pride and was among the most technologically advanced palaces of its time.
Tragically, the palace suffered severe damage during the 1934 Bihar–Nepal earthquake and has remained in ruins ever since. Though neglected and weathered by time, it still attracts visitors, heritage enthusiasts, and artists who come to witness the echoes of its lost glory. Navlakha Palace stands today as a historic reminder of the artistic brilliance and administrative grandeur of Bihar’s royal era.
