Hansi Fort

Discover the Ancient Sword Fortress of Hansi

Explore Hansi Fort – The Historic Citadel of Swords and Sovereigns

Hansi Fort, locally known as Asigarh Fort, is a remarkable 11th-century hill fort located in the town of Hansi in Hisar district, Haryana. Spanning approximately 30 acres, the fort is steeped in history and legendary tales of kings, warriors, and spiritual sanctity. It was originally constructed by King Anangpal Tomar of Delhi and later reinforced by the iconic Rajput ruler Prithviraj Chauhan. The name ‘Asigarh’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Asi’, meaning sword, as the fort was historically a center of sword manufacturing and martial training.

The fort’s immense stone walls, which rise nearly 52 feet high, once protected the ancient citadel that governed over 80 smaller forts in the region. Inside the fort, you’ll find a large central baradari (twelve-pillared structure), believed to have been used as a royal pavilion. The fort complex also includes mysterious underground tunnels built during the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, which were once escape routes or secret chambers. Rich in architectural detailing, its entrances and corridors feature carvings of deities, floral designs, and inscriptions in various languages. Many ancient Jain bronze statues, coins, and relics were excavated from this site in the 20th century, indicating its religious and cultural diversity.

Today, Hansi Fort is a preserved archaeological site and a symbol of Haryana’s royal legacy. Tourists and history lovers are drawn to its grandeur, heritage market surroundings, and the panoramic views it offers of Hansi town. The peaceful atmosphere, historical ruins, and the enduring walls narrate tales of courage, art, and devotion that once defined this ancient stronghold.
